Ok so I have some customers using Google now to host their email. They have an IP Office with voicemail Pro release 9.1.4 and can't get it to send their voicemails to their emails accounts hosted by google.
I'm using the IP address of the VMPro server as the domain. I've tried both 465 and 587 ports per googles instructions with no success. I can access the google email account the customer wants to use via the web interface so I know I'm using the correct credentials.
Has anybody had any luck using google and if so what is the secret recipe here?
Thank you.

Yes, almost every day someone posts the same thing.
The one fix I've found is that you have to turn on 2 factor auth, and setup a "application password" for the user. Instead of using the users normal password, you get one generated that is something like XDGH DXAD XDAF DAFE or similar. Just copy and paste it into the password field in the vmpro client. So long as everything else is configured correctly, it'll work fine.

Makes sense. Since google upped their authentication mechanisms, older methods don't work.

Totally unrelated, by but my grandad's old mac was on 10.6 or 7 and i had to enable "weak authentication mechanisms" or something to let his mac mail login via imap to gmail.

Might help. Thought I'd share.

Yep Google has really goosed it email, it's far from intuitive when you're trying to work it out too :)

So thank you all for your posts. It gives me something to work with. However I also discovered the info below on Google's help site. Would it have anything to do with what I'm experiencing?
To create an SPF record for a domain:

Log in to the administrative console for your domain.
Locate the page from which you can update the DNS records.
You may need to enable advanced settings.
Create a TXT record containing this text: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all

Publishing an SPF record that uses -all instead of ~all may result in delivery problems. See Google IP address ranges for details about the addresses for the Google Apps mail servers.

To authorize an additional mail server, add the server's IP address before just before the ~all argument using the format ip4:address or ip6:address. (See Sender Policy Framework for more details on the SPF format.)
If your registrar also requires a host setting (such as @), see the TXT records for specific domain providers list for precise instructions.
Save your changes.
Keep in mind that changes to DNS records may take up to 48 hours to propagate throughout the Internet.
Note: Multiple SPF records are not recommended and may cause delivery and spam classification issues. See Multiple SPF records for more information.
If you have difficulty creating an SPF record, contact your domain provider for assistance.
