Hi there,

A neighborhood bar bought an IP Office 406 early model recycled unit with 6 6408D phones and asked me to help them.

Please be gentle on me, I and a Nortel expert, but I am curious about this system and parking.

I cannot log into this unit via laptop, but I have been able to do a substantial amount of programming via the Menu and Admin buttons.

Main 200 automatically calls all of the phones. Can I create a Group Paging [200] and program a button on each phone to page Group 200?

Also, under the "Call Parking" programming via Menu button, can I program a Call Park [101] and [102] and program a Park101 and Park102 button on all 6 phones so they can pick up a call on any phone. I see that there are two menu entries:

Call Parking
[ ] Done

and

Call Park to Extension

[ ] Done

I believe I want to use the first one and enter 101 program a button and then select the feature again and program a button to 102.

Conclusion, I'd like the bartenders to be able to page the owner in the basement and say, "Owner you have a call parked on Park101 or Park102" Then the owner can press a button to retrieve the call.

Am I on the right track?

Joe

Yes.
A Call Park button with the same number on all phones enable any user to park a call with that button and anyone can retrieve that call using the same button.
So, yes you are on the right track with this.

Park doesn't works 'nortel style' until 9.0, but you're not going to get past release 6 on a 406.

With 6 phones, two or three fixed park numbers should be more than enough, especially in a bar. Just remember to tell them if your wife calls and asks for Joe, nobody has seen you tonight.

It does if it is programmed that way.
The 406 can be a lot of different releases and some of them work better than others.
You can upgrade up to R5.0 (if you have the big memory chip) without worrying about licensing but you should get the programming via PC / laptop going to make your live easier.
If you don't know the IP address then you can hook up a laptop and wireshark it to see what it sends out to determine the IP address. By default is uses 192.168.42.1 so if you want to give that a whirl then maybe you save the wireshark work.

The parking can be set on park buttons that flash when in use and then you can pick up the call by double pressing the flashing button. If you chose random numbers than you can use one button for as many park zones as you wish but have no control of how many people are on park 9it will ring back after the park timeout timer expires which is by default I think 300 seconds but people hanging on park for that long may start to yell at you after that.
The most elegant way to park that I have found is with 2 park zone buttons (or more but 2 should do for a lot of calls already) that are the same on all phones to make it easy to park and unpark callers as well as seeing if the park zones are in use.
Btw the 6408D+ phones are the best phones that Avaya ever built, i have a bunch of them in my house and will not get rid of them until all my spares are broken.

Thanks guys....nobody did see me down in the basement office.....it's like a bomb shelter..... :) Met some pretty waitresses though.

I was able to solve the problem.

I programmed the Page buttons really easily....

Parking was a bit of an issue. First I tried a generic 101 and 102 park code....didn't work. Then I had success when I created a Park 200 button using the main ring group. I used the "Call Park" command in the Admin menu and placed 200 into the brackets. I then programmed a button on each phone named Park 200.

Then I used Abbreviated Dial and created a code *38*200# and then placed it into a button labeled "Unpark"

This worked like a gem. The bar owner received a call on the main phone, parked the call on Park 200 and then picked up in the basement using the Unpark (Abbreviated Dial) button.

I absolutely love the 6408D+ telephones.....very clean, modern, still look good to this day....in fact they look better than most of the other "low budget" brands out there. They are right up there with my favorite Nortel sets.

Curious, when did the 6400 first sets come out? 1998? The were labeled Lucent for a short time......I just ordered one for my IP Office at home.

Thanks,

Joe

FYI I wasn't able to get the flashing Park keys to work......but I achieved enough to earn the respect of the owner, meet their needs, and earn some free beers and dinner.

You have a working solution which is good but the way you have programmed you unopark key is not best practice.

I supect you wont have an opertunity to correct this not but resetting the security settings and programming from manager is the way to go if you can
