I'm trying to add a remote IP phone to a 403 3.2(69) system. Currently there are only digital sets on the system. I'm reading that I need a VCM card and no licenses. I see that these older VCM cards fit onto the main motherboard of the 403 unit. How can I check if the system already has a VCM card through Manager? Thanks.

I don't think Manager will list it. You need to run Monitor. When it starts up it will give you an inventory.

You aren't likely to have one with no IP phones, would have been an odd purchase otherwise :)

System status will also list the VCM channels in the resources section.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Oh it does on my 406. Sorry that is my goof up.

Ya a bit before my time sadly. Another reason this forum is so great.

in monitor the resources line will show if there are VCM channels available if it shows VCOMP=0 then there are no no VCM channels in the system.

How is it possible there are a lot of questions on the forum about these old timers, replace these unreliable systems with modern stable systems.

You cannot blaim a modern tech to know all about ancient technologies, that is not fair.
I bet you never heard of the "disconnect clear"feature before you came to this forum with old school techs on it.

I heard it before coming here... only because I have a colleague who has done this for 20 years [wink]

I get your point but you would think if you explain the issue to a tech either they should be able to figure out the setting that needs changed or at the very least know the tech that would know the correct setting. Maybe I am just optimistic though.

Thanks fellas. It says VCOMP=5, invaluable help here. I wish I could just replace it, but they have 35 digital sets on this system, that's a lot of expensive new DS ports to buy. So since there are VCM channels on this system, they just need an older 56xx IP phone, register it to the IP Office and set up a VPN at the remote location, is that right?

The Vcomp 5 is the newer one with better echo cancellation (used to be vcomp 6 before that)
you should be good to go for local IP phones.
VPN phones I think need a license and I am not sure if "remote phones" with port forwarding actually work on that old release.
you may be able to use it with a hardware VPN but TBH I can't remember any more.

OK sorry VCM5 is the old one the new one is VCM4, but if you don't stress them out they still work quite well.

It's only 1 IP phone so it 'should' be fine. I'll read up more to try to find out if a remote IP phone requires a license, or if they can work with just forwarding ports.

In these days Avaya was eager to sell IP Office so almost everything was unlicensed in these days.

oeps now you say something which was common these days but should be avoided by all means : Port forwarding.

Don't even think of it, build a secure VPN connection. If not then within days you will see your system has been hacked which leaves you with a bill of at least a several thousend dollars!

Thanks. I'll have the IT guys build a VPN for this and cross my fingers.

Ip handsets will not work with port forwarding (at least not at this level of firmware), it is also a huge security risk

IIRC you could run VPN firmware in the handsets but that required a licence which is almost certainly no longer available.
a hardware VPN (router to router) at the remote location is deficiently the best (& possibly only) option on a unit this old.

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear
