Wow, this question is really difficult.
How can you make your life easier... well if it is too easy then will be boring. If it is to difficult, then it is stressing.
But, the trick is like in business. Fix goals (operational, tactical and strategical). And built your actions in a way to cover and to achieve them.

Pick up TCP/IP Illustrated by W. Richard Stevens. It's a little old but provides an incredibly solid foundation for working with IP. Having read it will make any problems you encounter easier to understand and troubleshoot.
