IP Hard Phones and Subnets 2

Hi,

I am currently working towards an install of approx 150 IP hard Phones with an IPO 412.

As we have it in our dem room now we are using an Ipoffice 412 and have two networks/LAN's/Subnets one for data and one for voice (well one for the phones and IPO the other for the data network and servers).

We have done all the DHCP scope stuff and 176 option however we are failing with the basic ip routing i.e

We have 192.149.42.x for Data/DHCP server etc
and 192.149.43.x for the phones.

Problem is we cannot ping from one to the other despite all the static routes we have tried.

I want to be able to use the IPO to route between the subnets.

I have heared mentioned that we will probably need a layer 3 switch with VLAN etc. however is there a basic way of doing it like we have tried???

We have one LAN switch (with dhcp server etc connected) plugged into LAN1 on the IPO and the other LAN switch (with IPPhones etc)plugged into LAN2 on the IPO.

We have tried several routes and configs however we cannot establish connectivity between the .42 and .43 networks.

We have had this all working in a single /24 network but now need to expand!

Any ideas or recommendations very welcome.

You should be able to route between the 2 networks without any routes on the IPO. failing this add a default route route with default gateway to each network on the ipo

I would never deply a Voip config like that, always use VLAN techniques for this kind of sites.
Putting 150 IP Hardphones and a lot of PCs on the same broadcastdomain will interfere with your voip calls and the quality will be poor.
The use of VLANs will make sure each kind of data has its own broadcastdomain.

yeehaababy: I have tried adding the a default route with a default gateway to both i.e 192.149.42.0 - 192.149.43.1 and
192.149.43.0 - 192.149.42.1 etc.

Unfortunately it didn't work and i'm not to sure why!?

It think if I use a 255.255.0.0 it will work with out routes but I don't think the customer will want to change his subnet!?

intrigrant: Yes I totally agree - I wouldn't normally either but the salesman didn't include a layer 3 switch as part of the package!

I kind of thought that what I would be doing is kind of a cheap, crap and easy way round it that may have worked with the 412 as it has two (V)LAN ports???

If you are not working with Vlans so i also think without Qos, be ready to lose your custumer.

It is also imnportant to note that VOIP is not supported by Avaya on Lan2 - I can work but may cause operqational problems

I have rolled out many IP Phone Solutions and stand exactly with what intrigrant states. I would also NEVER rely on the IP Office Routing interface eg: LAN 1 and Lan2 to route between the subnets, it simply is NOT designed for this task. LAN2 was typically desgined to be a WAN access interface eg : DSL Etc Etc

You should look at a VLAN enviroment, with either a L3 switch for vlan (subnet) routing or a decent router eg: Cisco.

I would move very fast to resolve as customers in this kind of a rollout and lose faith very quickly if IP Phones dont work. If you are not proficient in configuring L3 Switches and VLANS then contract someone who is to resolve the issues @ site.

Would anyone be able to recommend a decent layer 3 switch?

We have looked at Nortel Baystacks but apparently the lead time is too long....

They will need to support a fibre backbone also i.e aswell as VLAN's, QoS etc.

For a small network, many are decent. Extreme, Cisco,
HP and 3Com have some less expensive small ones too.
