I have inherited a cisco ip conference unit model 7936
Has anyone ever tried to install the nortel unistem firmware on one of these to work on BCM.

Just curious if this is even possible ?

I have a Polycom SoundStation IP 4000... in Nortel Packaging ironically and I've been trying to do this for the past couple months, with no luck unfortunately.

Although I think it SHOULD work (as the IP4000, Cisco 7936 and I2033 are all the same model.... just different firmwares), the problem I've found is these phones usually reqire a signed firmware and when you try to install something that isn't signed (or something that's not understood), the upgrade aborts.

I wish there was a way to directly load the firmware onto the flash of the phone, but so far I've been unsuccessful.

I hear ye, been trying to tftp the nortel firmware on to this unit for a couple of days now and no joy what so ever.

Polycom tends to use the same industrial design for the desktop unit but the hardware/firmware can be completely different. If you try cross loading firmware, it may or may not work and you will definitely run into support issues with the vendor.
