This is something I consider to be a tricky situation. Soon I will be leaving for school, and I will be leaving my Windows 2000 Server PC at home on the network so I can have a server outside of my school's firewall. But here is the problem:

All the PCs in my house are connected into a router which is used to route an internet connection through a cable modem. Once I am at school, I'll have no way of obtaining the Internet IP address of the router without having someone in the house physically check the IP address by logging into the router or by going to Normally the IP doesn't change too often, but regardless, it does change from time to time. I was wondering if there is anyway that the server can obtain the WAN IP address somehow and email it to my email address. Is this possible?

This looks good. But how does the DNS server know when the IP address of my server changes? If it doesn't, than this doesnt really do me any good. I would imagine that an app would have to run on the server that would broadcast it's IP address to a DDNS service, which would then update it. Am I correct?

Ok nevermind, I found one that has an update client. This is perfect. Thanks so much.

Which one did you use? I am curious about this also. I was looking at the same situation but I figured I would write it down before I left for the day...

I am also going to be dialing in to my server and running some of the other computers through a Tight VNC or something similiar.

It has a page where you can download various update clients, but they are all for Windows. I'm not sure if any Linux clients exist, but I hope so because I want to eventually try this on a Linux server.

I have a router -- Dlink DI-604 which with newer firmware has a built-in dynamic dns client, pretty useful!

Good luck
