Does anybody know how to find somebodies IP address from just knowing somebody on say....Napster or some other program like that? Are there any software programs that can detect stuff like that without being directly connected?

I cannot see how invading their privacy helps make it a better world, try to give an example where you have soome right to know. The one thing you can't give for your heart's desire is your heart. - Lois McMaster Bujold

Ok heres the deal. There is somebody who is hacking my computer from a file sharing program called winmx, I have told him/her to stop with no result. As i do not have broadband (only dial up) I really have no need for a fire wall. Well the deal is I need to find their IP address so I can report them to their local ISP. And since the only way i know them is through that program......how else could I do it? As for evading privacy...I do not believe it as that. Evading privacy is hacking and stupid crap like that.

To be honest, the fact that you say someone is tryn to get into your system shows that you DO need a firewall. What about the next person that tries to do it? Get a firewall.

It does sound like you do need a FireWall. May I suggest "Zone Alarm" The Price is right (free).

It seems a little dubious that you know enough to detect "hacking" but you don't know how to detect IPs.

Seems a little odd.

Ok how i can detect it is that I have a program called Net Medic it is made by Vital Signs I think the address is and I have an old version that I dont think they make anymore. But with that program I can see if my connection is active or not. And when I am no doing anything at all and I see my connection going hay wire I know that somebody or something is doing stuff on my computer......its really not that hard. And along with zone alarm I have tried that once before breifly and that just locks your internet up, when im not using the internet, since i have dial up I just disconnect so zone alarm would be pretty useless. Thx anywayz

I wasn't trying to insult you with my last post so sorry if that's how it came off. I'm just suggesting that even when you think you're connection should be doing nothing, there are things going on.

You could get a Packet Sniffer and see this. You can get heaps of them. They are everywhere. If you go to download.com and search for one you'll get tons of hits.

They are not all good, they are not all easy to use and the info is going to be misleading because you might see traffic from your ISP making sure you're still alive, or your mail client checking for mail, or MSN messenger checking for mail, or any number of microsoft or real player, or anybody elses, Auto Update programs, or any number of things that might be going on that may or may not be hacking.

If you want to go through a lot of work get a packet sniffer and chase down all the IPs.

You're best bet is a firewall. If Zone Alarm is killing your connection try another one. It's a lot easier than tracking down hackers. There are entire foundations dedicated to trying to figure out the best way to track down hackers. Go to and read their whitepapers. If they make sense to you then you're equipped to track down a hacker. If they dont...just fuss with the firewall until you get it to work. :)

You might also want to make sure you have the latest version of every driver and piece of software you're running. Not because the newest software is "hack proof" but the newer software will at least require different hacks and at least somebody wont be able to conquer your machine with a hack that came out in 1972. :)

Best of luck.

That is not as easy as it sounds because:

1. If this person connects to the Internet by a dialin connection it will get a new IP on each Connection.

2. This person may use an annonymizer, which switches the real IP to an randomly generated IP.

ok, lets all calm down, take a deep breath, and let it all go. First, get a firewall if you suspect you are being "hacked". Second, What is one your computer that someone would "hack" in for? Third, Do you have a fast connection?
No one hacks a slow computer, with a slow connection. And almost no one hacks a home pc unless they know you or are mad at you.

That said, go back to the first thing, get a firewall.
Black ice is decent, and free. This will allow you to shut down/ monitor all tcp/ip ports on your system, any information going to/ from these ports, and what IP address they are going to. after you find this out, close down access to that ip address.
Still worried? Dont use Winmx, and buy your music/porn movies. Remember, if it hurts when you poke it, dont poke it.

when you are getting hacked, run netstat -a to get all connections at a given time. Look for established sockets that don't belong. Ping them, get IP address. attempt to download something from this "hacker" on winmx. Run netstat -a again. Are there now 2 connects from the same IP on different ports? There he is then.
