Hello, I have a network related issue. I'm running Windows XP SP2. I use ipconfig in the command prompt to show the IP address on my labtop. When I disconnect the cable and do an ipconfig I still see the same IP address instead of network cable disconnected... This is causing an issue because I have security software on the computer that depends on an automatic release renew upon disconnection of the network cable.. Why is the labtop not releasing the IP address?? The IP address is not static and TCP/IP is set to use DHCP. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You wouldn't see that in the CMD line, but you should see it on the Task bar. it does this on every computer I have ever used.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

It sais network cable disconnected in the taskbar but it should also say it in the dos screen. I just tried it on another computer and it sais media disconnected after an ipconfig. Thank you!

Is it the only network connection? (eg, no wireless).

What's the network (home/router, office/server etc)?

Does it allow you to manually release the 'disconnected' ip address with ipconfig?

Go into network connections. Highlight your LAN connection. Right click on it and say Properties. Make sure there is a checkmark in the box that says "Notify me when this device has limited or no connectivity". If not, put one in there and say Apply.
