I have 8 computers on a workgroup and have 1 network printer(with network port).I want to connect the printer to one of the computers using network utp cable and also to assign IP address.A network point is available next to the computer. How do i go about it and i how do i assign ip addresses to the printer?

What is the make and model of the printer?

If it has a LAN connection, then usaly it would have some sort of web-based interface where you can tell it what IP address to use and which workgroup to join.

Check the manual to see what address to enter in your web browser.

Yes it has lan connection. So how do i assign ip address

If it is HP, there is a program called JetDirect which you have to download from the HP site. It installs something that finds all the HP printers. You may have to cold start them and thereafter they will respond to 192.0.0.192

I haven't got a clue if it isn't an HP printer.

As tony72000 wrote: 'what is the make and model?' & 'check the manual'. Out of the box, or after resetting, most of these will be set to automatically pick up an address via DHCP. In addition to the web interface, often the settings can be changed from the machine's control panel menu.

BTW, this conversation should probably be in forum929 (General printer discussion).

Its a konica 1715 pcl6 printer. As i have said earlier the computers are in a workgroup and not a domain. All 8 computers have a lan connection and ip address and so would like to assign an ip address so that the computers can communicate with the printer.

I can't find this model anywhere on the internet. Not even on Konica's web site!

Maybe you should post this discussion in forum929 as smash suggested, so you could get a more experienced answer on printers.

re post the model you have with a link to show the picture!!!

i have 5 of these makes and they work as you ask in work groups using there own print server software..

but we need to see what model you have

Who said anything about a domain? How do the computers get their IP addresses? Try connecting with a web browser to the next numerical address above the highest computer address. For example if your computers are getting DHCP addresses from a personal router, they will likely be getting 192.168.0.xxx So, if that is the addressing scheme, from any web browser inside the network, try connecting to

There is no domain. Its only a workgroup.I want to assign an IP address to the printer.Pls how do i go about it?

It might have already gotten one - how do the 8 computers get IP addresses?

who said any thing about a DOMAIN....I said a print server program... what is the model re post as asked pse.... :) It comes with network cards on some printers but unless we clarify the model he has we will not know ???

The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up there's no law against wacking them around a little.
