Hi,

I have a cisco 2948g-l3 switch. I have assigned an IP address to a FastEthernet Port, but I can't ping it, or ping out. Is there some trick to this?
Also is there a Gui tool for this switch, beside Network Assistant or is this the Best?

I am running IOS 12.0(7) WX5(15a)

Any Help Would be Appreciated.

Thanks,

have you given the interface a 'no shutdown' command?
check sh ip int brief for the status.
what are trying to ping? and how is it connected?

CCNA, CCNP..partly ;)

I have issued a no shutdown command. The port is working.
I am trying to ping anything. The servers and router are connected through this switch and everything does work except for this. I can ping the router from the server, but I can't ping the switch IP from the server, and I can't ping the router or server from the switch.

Thanks

I assume from the workding of your original post you have added the IP address to a physical interface? i.e.

interface FastEthernet1
ip address 10.10.10.10 255.255.255.0

I also assume you have your devices just plugged into any of the FastEthernet ports on this switch?

If this is the case you have misunderstood this switch, since it is running the OLD Catalyst IOS code and must be configured like a router to achieve the switching you require. You need to configure a feature called 'Integrated Routing & Bridging'. Take a look at the following document on CCO to explain how to set it up:

What ip address are you pinging from? Do you have a default gateway/route set?

Try assigning the IP address to the default VLAN - In most cases this is VLAN 1.

Make sure you are then on the same subnet (or have a layer 3 device in between).

Once you have completed this you should be able to use telnet to remotely access the switch.

As for a GUI, just open up explorer when you have an IP address assigned and browse to the address and then use the Cisco Cluster Management Suite to manage the switch.

Reamin positive. The affect on those around you will amaze.

ADB100,

My cisco CCO login doesn't let me look at this document.

Can you post the document or provide a login that works.

Thanks

ADB100,

Thanks For the Document. I have tried setting up
integrated Routing and Bridging as seen in example 1. This is the only switch that I have, and I don't need to configure any of the other Connections to the Catalyst Switches.
I can't assign any ports or create a Default Vlan1 and Clear config all doesn't work.

Thanks

If you want every port in the same VLAN you need to place each on into a Bridge-Group and then apply your managment IP address to BVI 1 as per the document? If you can't manage this I would probably get someone in.......

Andy

ADB100,

Thank You for all your help. I was finally able to
get the IP Address assigned and recognized. I had misconfigured the BVI Interface.

Thank You to everyone else who helped.
