Hi Everyone,

I found an old cisco 2621 router lying around at work. I decided to setup a router on a stick setup but noticed I don't have the encapsulation commands when in int/sub-interface mode.

This leads me to believe that the IOS is out of date.

I've never updated an IOS before and looking for some advise. I went to the cisco support site and took a look at the available IOS for the version:

All of them seem to require 128mb of DRAM and 32mb of FLASH. At this point, I think I don't meet these requirements.

I'm looking to upgrade the device so that I have:
-IP services
-Multicast PIM
-ACLs
-Encapsulation capabilities

Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Evan

Go to Cisco Feature Navigator, it will tell you everything you seek...

You have ipbase software , you will need at least ipplus or higher feature set to run a router on a stick setup . You will need to stay within the DRAM specs for your box , looks like 48 meg of dram and also whatever flash you have looks like 16 meg .

Email me at tim and liz h at gmail dot com, if you want, and I will guide you through what you need...too much to list here.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I need to build a couple of networks first for work but once they've been built, tested and shipped, I'll attempt to upgrade the IOS on this old device.

Will I need to pay for the IPplus feature for this old router?

My plan now is to go through all my old notes/books and tutorials on IOS to get a better understanding this week since I need to purchase some L3 devices, used or new for work for advanced multicast testing.

Any recommendations?

I'm looking for two L3 devices. It will need to support 100 mcast udp streams [8mbps each] coming from 3 daizy chained switches and push the traffic to the other L3 router via PIM over fiber.

Thanks again for the help,

Evan
[CCNA, CCDA, was CCNP but I let it expire! *OUCH* :p]
