Inventory I/O device error.

I moved the Backup Exec installation from one server to a new server. We have a SCSI array attached to this new server, which is where we would like to save our backups. We have the Backup-to-Disk Folders setup. The first time I run an inventory on any Backup-to-Disk folder it is successful. If I try to run a job to the folder it just stays queued so I cancel the job. I can do a test run and it is successful, but when I do an inventory again it gives me the error "The request could not be performed because of and I/O device error." We were backing up to this array from the other server, and it was backing up those jobs perfectly. The drive letter for the array on the new server is E. If we point a Backup-to-Disk folder to a local drive installed in the server such as the D drive, it runs without any problems. It is a Promise array and the size is 9 TB. If anyone can help me with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Had this problem on a few Dell Servers, updating the firmware on the PERC controller and tape device seemed to sort it.

Not much to go on but it might be a good start if you haven't already tried updating the Assay/SCSI Devices Firmware.

I updated the firmware for the array, but I am not sure about the RAID controller. The firmware update for the array did not do anything. I have an "Adaptec SCSI card 39160 - Ultra 160 SCSI" controller in the server. The latest update for it was on 5/30/2001 on the Adaptec site. The driver details says the driver date is 10/1/2002. The driver installed in the machine is probably a Microsoft driver. Should I try the latest firmware update on the Adaptec site? Thank you for your suggestion(s).

Is your tape device on the RAID controller or the Adaptec SCSI card 39160 - Ultra 160 SCSI?

If it's on the Adaptec SCSI card 39160 - Ultra 160 SCSI then updating the firmware won't harm it and may sort out the problem.

What tape device are you using?

On a more depressing note on some of our Dells we couldn't get anything sorted so ended up buying new SCSI controllers

Actually, we are not using a tape device for backups. We are using a Promise VTrak M500p in a RAID 5 setup. It has 15 hard drives we are using to save our backups to. So we have all our Backup-to-Disk folders on the array.

The Adaptec SCSI card 39160 is connected to the VTrak M500p with the SCSI connector. I think we might be using a software based RAID controller, but I a not sure. There is nothing between the Adaptec card and the Promise storage device. In Device Manager, under SCSI and RAID controllers, it just shows the Adaptec card.

The Adaptec site is also not letting me download anything at the moment, so as soon as it is working again, I will try the Adaptec driver to see if it will fix the problem.

Thanks again for your help.

I installed the Adpatec driver for the card and there is still no change. The firmware version that is installed into it is the latest version also. Everything has been updated and it is not working. If there is anything else that can be suggested, let me know. Thank you.

For everyone who has this problem of something like it, I figured out how to fix the problem I was having. All I needed to do was go to the Devices tab on the top of the screen, right click on each Backup-to-Disk folder on the array that was directly connected to the server running Backup Exec, and click on properties. When that window opened up I clicked on the advanced tab, and under device settings, I unchecked "Auto detect settings" and checked both "Buffered reads" and "Buffered writes". After I did this, it began saving all the backups that I chose to that directly attached array on the same server.
