You can also modify the Boot.ini file in the Windows XP graphical user interface (GUI):

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
2. On the Advanced tab, click Startup and Recovery, and then click Settings.
3. Under System Startup, click Edit.
4. Save your changes, and then click OK.
5. Click Start, click Run, and then type msconfig to start the System Configuration utility.
6. Click the Boot.ini tab.
7. Click 'Check all boot paths' to test for errors.

If you do Steps #1 -- Step #3 above, copy and then paste your findings back to the Forum. Someone can help you to make any edits that will be required.

Working with the Boot.ini file from within XP may require that you have both Hidden and System files set to be visible via the Folder Options/ View. The Boot.ini may also have the Read Only attribute set via Properties.

If you are lucky you may have a backup of the original Boot.ini in the root of C: drive which is called Boot.bak, this file can be Renamed to Boot.ini (after changing the original Boot.ini's name to something else. When changing file extensions you may need to have the option in Folder Options/ View, "Hide extensions of known file types", unchecked.

I have had a couple of repairs that involved Adware and deleted Boot.ini files by the Adware. I had to rebuild the Boot.ini file to fix the issue. The Adware also added its entry in the WININIT.INI file

thought this might be worth a look to see the cause of the boot.ini issue
