I have been asked by an Avaya vendor in another state to power up an Intuity MAP40 and see what the release is. The original owner has the equipment and is thinking of reinstalling it. When I turn in on, I get the Avaya screen, and after a couple of minutes a message that says there is no OS. The system also appears to be looking to both the floppy drive and the CD drive before it returns that message.

I would think the OS would be on the hard drive and should still be with the system? I can see inside the floppies but the CD bay won't open so I don't know if there is a CD in there that shouldn't be.

If the customer has all the original paperwork showing ownership could they get another copy of the OS from Avaya or is there something else I should be doing? Thanks in advance.

I believe the MAP 40 went end of sale/life awhile back, so Avaya would not provide any software. You can use a paperclip to open the CD Rom by inserting it into a tiny hole in the front of the drive. You could also check inside the case to see if the drive was removed or the cables somehow came loose. The MAP 40s were different versions of Unixware (SCO for all intense purposes) depending on the release. I don't even think any modern day *nix support the file system that was used for Unixware and would not be able to mount the drive. You could always try a live *nix CD and test that theory.

If the customer has the original tapes/floppies they might be able to get it going, but the licensing would be a different issue. Technically Avaya sells a license to use the software, not the software itself and does not consider it to be the property of the customer (the physical server is considered the customer's).
