I'm familar with VISUAL BASIC, and already know how
to use the WINSOCK control to access TCP/IP at an extremely
basic level.
It looks like I'll have to start designing my VB programs
to start incorporating TCP/IP. However, I know almost nothing about it nor its advantages/limitations vis-a-vis
other protocols.
Can somebody suggest some good introductory books? I
prefer to learn by doing, and can try things out with
some hardware we have here.

I find the following three books useful.

Internetworking with TCP/IP, 4th ed. by Douglas E. Comer
TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 1, by Wright and Stevens
TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 2, by Wright and Stevens

I settled for NETWORKING FOR DUMMIES and BASIC HOME NETWORKING. However, it looks as if we may chose to not
install a LAN!

Have you looked at this is a great source on TCP/IP. “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”
