We would like to introduce a second Windows 2000 Server to our existing Windows 2000 Server which is a domain controller and is an Exchange 2000 server. Can we make the second server a domain controller as well? Or do we have to make it a member server because of the integration of the Exchange 2000 server with AD? We only have one domain.

Thanks

Thanks Bronto. So a server that is made a DC can be used to service any function such. I mean if I had 3 Windows 2000 servers belonging to the same domain, the first an exchange 2000 server with AD and the first domain controller, the second a file server and the third a print server. I could promote the file server and the print server to domain controllers.

IF you have a small network, only have 2 DC's. keeping DC's in sync can take some time and there is no reason to have more than 2 unless you have a WAN or over 200 PC's.

Whatever Network Services you have on the 1st DC, use them on the other DC (ie: WINS, DHCP). It is best to have redundency for all network services. I build all my networks with reduntant systes and my users have 99% uptime.

So the second server should also be setup with the same DNS settings just like the first server?

Your second server should use AD integrated DNS just like the first DC. Set them to automatic updates and DNS will do most of the work for you. And yes, use the same setup setting when the AD wizard gets to that point.
