1)A catalog is a database for a user where he creates his own tables, joins, items, prompts, calculations and conditions.
2)Hot files are .ims files coming from a different database which you integrate into your catalog.
3)The transformer is used to create dimensional models and also create cubes
4)Explorer report builds a default report when u open it, whereas in reporter u define the dimensions and measures in ur report and then build it
