I am working on my neighbors computer. He has a network with two computers. They are both connected with the same internet connection, using at&t broad band cable internet. One of the computers connects very fast. The other computer's internet connection is very slow. The computer that is slow has 256mb ram, and is a 1.6gigaherz. So, it isn't a processor problem. What could be the problem?

its it just browsing slowly or have you tested the speed?

also, what OS, browser ect.

thanks "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

They must be connecting to a hub that is connected to a router.

1. Try a new cable going to the hub.
2. Check to see the NIC is set to half duplex
3. Check the tcp/ip settings, and make sure they match the one that is working to the T.
4. check for NIC driver updates.
5. Check for background programs running.

What OS is installed?

Both computers are running windows 2000 profesional. Both are running microsoft internet explorer 6.0, or w/e the newest one is. I tried checking internet speed, but the sights won't even load. What would be the problem with programs running in the background? What type of program would be bad? Also, what are nic drivers?

Thanks,

-J

NIC - Network Interface Card. Your network card and associated drivers.

Oh, ic. Thanks. Also, how do I check the duplex; whether or not it is half or full duplex? I am having problems finding that setting. Thanks...

ok, first things first. connect one pc directly to the cable modem and make sure to recycle power to the modem then reboot pc. you need to make sure the service from the modem is "good". if not call the at&t support. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

InterNETech - "One of the computers connects very fast. The other computer's internet connection is very slow"
sounds like the BB connection is fine; it's a machine isolated problem.

JCLcooldude - "I tried checking internet speed, but the sights won't even load."
1. Your broadband connection is (probably) fine - as you can connect at a reasonable speed on one of your machines.
2. What's your network architecture?
e.g. ISP --- cable modem --- router
with both PCs plugged into the router?

3. What's your network IP configuration?
use the command prompt command "ipconfig /all". post the (full) results. do this for both machines.

there's a lot of issues which can impede your LAN connection (it does sound like a LAN issue, not a BB issue)
It could be your IP configuration, it could be a DNS issue (try pinging a web URL, then try pinging it's IP address - compare the results), it could be adware or spyware on your machine (Do you run Kazaa?), it could be a (misconfigured) firewall, it could be another app on the PC taking so much processing power that there's none left for IE!

Let us know how you're getting on

oops! i didn't catch that one pc had a good connection.

sounds like a NIC issue to me. i'd try seeing if there is any difference in ping times by typing "ping -t at the DOS prompt at BOTH pc's. (in order to stop the ping command press ctrl+C) if both results are the same then you know its a browsing problem. if there is packet loss or higher ping times then its NIC or router port issues.

also, are you SURE the pc with the problems is even online? does it finaly load any websites or does it just give "page cannot be displayed" after trying for a bit? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

JCL,

Did you get the problem resolved?

I had that problem here at my Internet Cafe. The solotion I came up with was the MTU Value was set too high.

If you're not familiar with that let me know and I'll walk you through it.

Daniel.
