I have 3 computers connected by a router. For months, every computer worked well and none had trouble accessing the internet. Suddenly, the connection to the newest computer, less than a year old, just stopped working. The others are fine. The cable is used for both PC and Playstation2. Neither works. We changed the position of the cable on the router..no help. We ran checks for adware, spyware and viruses. Clean. We called Linksys and they checked our settings, which were all ok. We thought that moving the connector between the PC and Playstation may have damaged it so we cut the cable and replaced the clip making sure the wires were in the correct configuration. Nothing. We found a kink in the cable near the computer so again we cut the cable to eliminate the kink and replaced the clip. Still nothing. The cable is mostly in the walls and runs through rooms and over doors, so it is not jostled or hurt. We have purchased cable and can re-run the cable to the router but were hoping maybe we missed a simpler solution. Any ideas.

Are the LED lights on the NIC and router? If no, you have a bad NIC or bad cable.

Is it just internet or have you lost network connection too?

Do you know how to properly crimp a plug on a cable?

Has anything been installed near where the cable runs to cause interference along the cable?

Has a mouse chewed the cable somewhere?

the LED lights are not on for that port on the router so should i run a new cable?

If its easy to do so then it wouldn't hurt. However, you need to know why the cable is bad. They don't just "break".

Can you run the cable across the floor to the router? I'd do this first to make sure your connection will work (move your computer closer if you must).

Running the cable across the floor first is a great idea. I think we'll try that although we won't get to it until Saturday. If you think of anything else please let me know.

Better ideas? Well, get some cable testing equipment and test the cables. Then again, that's not better since it will probably cost more than running a new cable.

You really need to determine if its the cable or the NIC. Both are relatively cheap. No sense spending hours of time when replacing the NIC ($10) might solve the problem.

So, I'd try the new cable first (since you already have it). If this doesn't work, it must be the NIC. Replace the NIC. Even if the NIC is installed improperly (ie. driver or settings error), the LED should still light up when a cable is plugged in. Unless, of course, the NIC is bad, is seated wrong or the PCI slot the NIC is in has been damaged.

Never, ever, ever, crimp RJ45 ends on cable unless you're positive you're using the right end with the right cable (Stranded or solid).

It would be much better if you just used jacks.

Use a premade patch cord, see if it works with that.
