Hi all,

I have to setup a small network tomorrow (monday). And I would like some help...

There is a cableconnection for the internet. This I put into the hub. from the hub there will be two computers connected. One computer with windows XP and one computer with windows 98 SE.

Do I have to do some special things to setup the Internet on both computers? Do I have to configure a lot of things? The two NIC's are correctly installed. But this is without the Internet connection. What do I have to change/install to surf on the Internet with both computers?

thanks in advance!

Is there no other possibility than a router? There is no router available. When I put the modem into the hub and then from the hub to the computers? will this work? other solutions...

thanks in advance

No. You need another NIC somewhere.

You could put a second NIC in one computer and run that to the cable modem. You must then make this computer act as a gateway to the internet running ICS.

If, by modem you are referring to the cable modem, then you don't need anything else. Cable modem's are both a modem and a router (actually a bridge). The modem has a WAN connection (the cable) and a LAN connection (ethernet), and they provide the bridging software to connect the two together. They generally also provide a DHCP server on the LAN side so that you don't have to manually configure each computer you attach to the LAN.

It would probably depend on the cable modem. I use ADSL but the modem is not a NIC. It must be connected to a NIC (or router).

Interesting. I've only heard that for satellite modems before. If that is the case, then all that you need to do is turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the machine that also has the cable modem.

I believe that both XP and 98SE have ICS. It is really just a simple NAT and IP forwarding solution.
