I have custom built PC(1999) with Rage 128 2000 Pro video adapter, which provided extremely sharp pictures until unrelated problem required full clean install of hard drive.

After reloading all of the software(Windows 98 2nd Ed) images on the internet did not look life-like(hard to describe, image is washed out, fuzzy or perhaps somewhat ghost-like. Money 2001 showed definite decease in sharpness.

Discovered that display could only be set at 16 colors, not high color before the re-install. I reloaded the drivers from CD-ROM, eventually loaded drivers from ATI website but no change.

Recently, I replaced ATI Rage with NVidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64Pro and still no change.

I would appreciate any opinions, suggestions or ideas.

try uninstalling the drivers

shut the pc down

pull the card out completely

reseat the card securely

restart, and reinstall the newest drivers from the website.

if it's AGP, make sure your AGP is turned on in the bios as well.

I lay claim to nothing and everything. My words may be wisdom or disaster. In the end you make a choice. Noone is perfect.

Shmoes,

Thanks for advice, already tried that along with interchanging current monitor(A) with another monitor(B). Monitor A worked perfectly on another machine while monitor B showed same problem when hooked to pc.

My biggest concern is that replacing adapter did not correct the problem. That adapter has also been tested in another machine and it worked correctly.

It occurred to me that the actual slot might be bad, so I moved to another PCI slot with the same result.

This has totally baffled me.

Colors locked in @ 16 colors is a driver issue, not having proper drivers installed. Even though the chip may be made by ATI, the card may not be, and require drivers from that manufacturer. It is NOT a monitor issue, just a driver issue. Try different driver versions, whatever you can think of to find one that will allow the full range of colors for your video card. Try getting latest detonator drivers for the nVidia card too.

i'd suggest you boot Windows 98 in safe mode, goto the Device Manager, find the display adapter, and remove it..
uninstall any left-over driver related software,
remove your temporary files left-overs,
shut down the computer, and reseat the card in a different slot if it's a PCI card, this would cause windows to detect it as a completely new card, otherwise if AGP, leave as is..

restart, and windows should prompt you for the drivers again..

i hope this approach helps in solving your problem
