Hi,
Perhaps someone can help me with this problem. Recently when using favorites folder to go to a particular web site I have noticed several sites are unable to be accessed by my computer, even when I type in the address. I know these sites are working cause I can access them on my sons computer. This seems to be occuring more and more, first there was one site now there are 8 sites I can not access. This started around a week or so ago. There has been no software or hardware added or uninstalled, as a matter of fact nothing has been done to this computer in around 6 months. I have done the following to try and rectify the problem: cleared history, cookies and temp files..no luck.
I'm using Win98se Abit TH7-11 MB with P4 1.5g CPU. All settings on MOBO are correct, I have reset the cable modem and router, still no luck.
Anyone have any idea? Thanks in advance for any help.

Would these sites happen to be "secure sites?"
Check your date/time on your pc.
It must be accurate to access certain sites.

Thanks guys,

I checked time and date, both ok, set security to LOW still no luck. Some sites are secure, some are not. I'm completely stumped.

Have a look at your TCP/IP settings
Try setting to a different DNS server,
something must have changed if you are having problems now and not before
Hope this helps

Are you sure you haven't run any Windowsupdates as well in the last 6 months? :)

If so, than you might want to try removing some updates to see if that works.

Are you using any third party programs for web privacy or security? They sometimes modify the hosts file or set up there own hosts file and maybe they have put these sites on the blocked list.

Fire walls line zone alarm are problems, also check you host file, This can give you these kind on troubles.

You don't say what version of IE you're running...or whether or not it's been service pak'd.
are you getting an error message? an error dialogue box or just the normal page not found page...
could these sites require your browser to have 128 bit encryption enabled?
I ran into this a few times, upgraded my browser to the 128 bit version and all was fine.
my wife had this problem but that was due to a software firewall problem, got rid of it and it cleared up.

I'm also assuming if you put these sites on your allow list in your security settings that you still can't access them.

are all security settings set to low?

Something to look at anyway.

Also, you might want to try pinging these sites from DOS to see if you can communicate with them. Just keep in mind that some sites block pings, so you won't get replies anyway. If you can ping the site, but can't display it in Internet Explorer, it is possibly a browser problem. You may want to try re-installing IE, or maybe repairing it. With Win98SE, here is how you repair

Start => Settings => Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs
Highlight Internet Explorer => hit "add/remove" and choose "repair Internet Explorer". That might fix it.

If all else fails i would manually go to that site after deleting the favorite listing and re-add. Then see if you can go there.
