Internet Explorer wont open pages

This is really annoying!!!. For some reason my girlfriends PC wont allow webpages to be viewed. Win 98 with IE 6 sp1. It has an IP(81.xx.xx.xx), it can ping/trace yahoo. I have repaired IE to no avail. I have reinstalled the network protocols and adapters. I have removed DUN, networking components and performed the usual reg alterations (which usually work) and still no joy which baffles me. As she lives a fair few miles away, so I have now upgraded her to XP (still no good) and am trying to setup a Remote web connection within XP. We both have cable access with NTL, I have a terayon cable modem attached to a PC(192.168.0.1) with ICS to a laptop (DHCP) through a hub. XP pro on the PC, XP tablet addition on the laptop. (i am using the laptop to connect). Norton Firewall and XP firewall are running on the PC (should allow external access?). She has access through a set top box. AND THE INTERNET HAS WORKED BEFORE!!!!

Advice on either/both would be pukka...

Start by repairing her Winsock service:

it may be ie itself.

goto the run box and type telnet

try to telnet to a website
host name:

http://www.microsoft.com

port: 80

click connect

just type "get" no quotes and you should see an error message.
if you connect and get the error message, the problem lies with ie.

if not, other than winsock troubles, there could be a misconfigured firewall not allowing outbound http (port 80) communications.

im having the same problem as i speak. I can connect to yahoo, icq, xnews (usenet program), I am using frontpage to connect to write this message right now. Neither IE or netscape will work and I have fixed IE, removed tcp/ip rebooted and re-added, removed DUN rebooted and remade the connection. If anyone can help please message me on yahoo because I cant check my email yahoo ID is thehittmann1981.

finally got it all fixed...no idea what the specific cause was but i just went delete happy and got rid of everything deleted all protocols, services, clients, my vius scanner.....firewall, google tool bar bunh of other stuff that i have installed in the past week.
I have a suspicion thought that it was the crap ass trial version of pc-cillin 2003 that I just installed.....it was from trend-micro.com so shouldnt have caused me grief....but im gonna blame them for it.

Just opened up Zonealarm to have sort of security while i have not got a virus scanner installed and its been running silent the whole time without me knowing....even though it is turned off on start up.
zonealarm was blocking my virus scanner updating, and blocked my telnet attempts. and blocked windows update, i bet with xp firewall, zone alarm, and pc-cillin firewall there wasnt much incomming or outgoing.
