Yes, downloading is enabled in the advanced security settings.

Yes, Scripting is enabled in the advanced security settings.

Yes, ActiveX is enabled in the advanced security option.
(i even tried 'LOWEST' security setting to see if there was something i over-looked.)

Yes, i did try the repair that comes with IE.

No, the registry doesn't appear to be corrupt.

Ver: IE5.0
OS: win98se

I'd try to update to fix the problem, but if that doesn't fix it then i'll have a brand-new browser that has the same old problem... besides, i can't download the update!!!

sience this started, my download/resume shareware program has started crashing/freezing also. (i had this for over 2 years, it's not likly to be the problem.)

Any help please?
[no, i'm not an IT moron. ;) ]

What "download/resume shareware program" are you using?

I'm knocking off for the day...won't get any reply you post til Monday. Try this registry fix:

Remove the Extension key in the registry.

: 1. Click Start and then Run.
: 2. Type in "regedit" without the quotations and click OK.
: 3. Once Registry Editor is up and running, select
: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\.
: 4. Click Registry and then Export Registry File.
: 5. In the File Name box, type in "regbackup" without the
: quotations.
: 6. In the Save as type box, select Registration Files (*.reg).
: 7. From the Save In dropdown menu, choose Desktop. Then, click the
: save button.
: 8. Right-click the "Extension" key in the right panel and then
: click Delete.
: 9. When you are prompted to confirm the value deletion, click Yes.
: 10. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Great, it worked.

exploring the key, i found that Netscape made registry entries there. When i un-installed N.S. *boom*

it's working fine now, execept for the "Save Target As..." in the context menu.

I'm open for suggestions on that, too. ;)

Yep...installing the competitions browsers causes problems...go figure. I'm looking into your othre issue, may be Monday, however.
