Hopefully someone can help me!!

We have recently added security to a folder on our intranet in a bid to capture the username of the person who submits a comment on our message board.

The problem in that whenever some users attempt to access the message board, they get a pop-up box asking for a username, password and domain. Not too handy!

Have discovered that if we change the custom level security settings on IE to "Automatic logon with username and password" the logon box no longer appears and the users can access the message board fine.

The issue is that we have some 300 + pc's onsite and don't really fancy walking round them all! I found the following on the internet:

With this in mind, I tried to create a .reg file with the necessary changes, here is what I have tried:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\1]
"1A00"="0x00000000"

But, as yet, no joy.

The pc's are all Windows 2000 and the browsers are all IE6.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated!

Are you running a 2000 or 2003 server on your network? You could push a policy out to change the settings.

If you load gpedit.msc goto User Configuration > Windows Settings > Internet Explorer Maintenace > Security > Security Zones and Content Ratings > You can customize the zones for your network.

Also what happened when you tried that reg file ?

Another way is to write a VBS script to edit the registry for you.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\1]
"1A00"="0x00000000"

-- and --
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\1]
"1A00"="0x00000000"

Unless you adjust Group Policy, the results for any user are additive.

"Note By default, security zones settings are stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry key. Because this key is dynamically loaded for each user, the settings for one user do not affect the settings for another. If you turn on the Security Zones: Use only machine settings setting in Group Policy, or if the Security_HKLM_only DWORD value is present and has a value of 1 in the following registry key, only local computer settings are used and all users have the same security settings:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

"If the Security Zones: Use only machine settings setting is not turned on in Group Policy, or if the Security_HKLM_only DWORD value does not exist or is set to 0, computer settings are used along with user settings. However, only user settings appear in the Internet Options. For example, when this DWORD value does not exist or is set to 0, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE settings are read along with HKEY_CURRENT_USER settings, but only HKEY_CURRENT_USER settings appear in the Internet Options."

2. You really should consider using the IEAK for this:

OK, Thanks guys.

vb scripting is a total mystery to me and our group policy is administered by an outsourcing company and they keep it all under lock and key!

I'll have a play around with IEAK and see if I can get it do what I want.

Thanks again
