after downloading the latest service packs and updates from microsoft my internet explorer frequently post error message and shuts down. often when i use the back button or clicking on links that my request user id . this happens so frequently that as a novice i am actually thinking of deleting internet explorer and then re-installing. any sugestions from the group before i nuke the program.

I am having the same problem with IE shutting down ever since loading several recent Windows updates. I then did a repair on Windows 2000 Pro using my original CD, but as soon as I reloaded the updates, the problem came back. This time I loaded the updates one at a time and I believe the specific update causing the problem is called, "Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB891861)"
Microsoft will still give you FREE tech help, but only if you specify that an update from them caused the trouble, otherwise they will charge you a small fortune. Be sure to have a complete list of everything you believe is wrong with your OS before calling them. The person routing your call writes down a list of the problems before you get to the actual tech. If you ask the tech about a different problem other than the ones in the list, he WILL NOT HELP YOU, unless you pay for it. Calling back with another question blamed on the same update will not work because they keep very good records of all the info. They work very hard at doing as little as possible unless getting paid for it.
