Internet Explorer doesn't open a new window

Hi,
I reloaded Windows 2000 recently and since been getting a weird glitch with Internet Explorer.
If you click on a link and the page loads by refreshing the current window there is no problem. However, if when the link is clicked and the new page wants to load from a new window nothing happens unless you left click the tab on the bottom toolbar then click the tab again then the new window opens and the requested page loads. Weird. I've uninstalled IE and reinstalled, I've gone through all the folder options and IE options..I'm flummoxed!! Any help would be greatly appreciated as my girlfriend is going barmy!! Try first my "works 70% of the time or better" fix:

Open notepad and copy/paste the below as IE_fix.cmd
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

Double click your saved IE_fix.cmd and answer the prompts.

Since the fix posted by bcastner didn't work (though it usually does), you might want to go a bit further and verify some registry settings as specified in this KB article:

...all else failing, you might want to download and run the mcrepair tool:

Also un-check under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced: "Reuse Windows for launching shortuts."

I've been through all of your suggestions with no luck.

Another clue might be that when IE 6 was uninstalled the same error was happening in IE 5...

Its very frustrating.

There have been some recent infections (MSBlast was one),
which made "open in a new window" (in IE6 anyway)and certain other desctop functions unavailable?

Hardware is easy, Software is not!
