When I boot up my PC, IE 6 also starts. I have been unable to find what is making it startup.

XP Pro sp1 IE 6 sp2

Can someoene help me?

Here are a few things to check:

Have you ran a known ad-ware removal tool (Adaware, Spybot, Spykiller, etc.)?

Have you looked it the "start" folder? You may need to look in 2 spots. C:\Documents and Settings\<Your login name>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. There could also be something within the local policy making it start. Run RSOP.MSC to find out....

have you installed some P2p program (bearshare or sth)? Because most of the times , that's where your problems come from. And this IE starting automatically, it's about 99 % certainty it's spyware.Let me guess, if you kill the process, it respawns almost directly...So go to google, and get hitman pro.

rgrds,

Thanks linney.

Actually, it is a corporate mandate that IE starts everytime the PC boots, don't know why, but I just don't like it and I want to disable it.

That allowed me to accomplish my mission.

From the way it sounds, you were able to fix this problem. From what I have read, it sounds like a startup issue is all. This is an easy fix not just for IE loading at startup, but also any programs(an example would be AOL or Earthlink). If you go to start>run>msconfig and from here click on the startup tab, you can select which programs you want to load. Be careful here and make sure you know what you are chosing as certain programs are required at startup. You can also do the same for services as well. msconfig is a pretty neat little tool XP has.

if it's a corporate mandate, then it's pushed with a group policy, and I don't think you will be able to override that (unless you are a member of the domain admins)
what you could do is rename iexplore.exe to sth else, than it will stop starting at boottime

rgds,

Even if you change the name of iexplore.exe, that is still pushing the boundaries of the corporate mandate (getting yourself out of compliance with it). This would probably need to be brought to the attention of management, as to why they are forcing IE to startup.....
