I have two pc's at home connected to the internet via an external ADSL Router. the laptop is running W2k and the desktop is running XP home. up until this morning both worked fine connected to the same router. The desktop now does not connect to the internet. The laptop however does.

I can ping the router from both machines and get a successful response.

I've tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to check the ip addresses and it all seems to work. However, still not internet connection on the desktop.

I've run spyware and antivirus software programs on the desktop in addition to regclean as well but it still keeps on doing the same.

I run Norton Internet Security and there are no issues showing in this application which has worked perfectly so far.

Any thoughts / help as I'm kinda stuck now...

Look forward to hearing from you guys.

Regards,

Phil

On the troublesome machine, Start, Run, CMD
ipconfig /all

And post the results here.

Clearly DHCP is failing for this workstation. Possibilities:

. Faulty cable
. Faulty port on the router (they can die on you)
. Firewall blocking DHCP traffic
. Uninstalling Antivirus software; e.g., . TCP/IP stack corruption from registry cleaners, spyware removal tools, etc. See: faq779-4625

Faulty cable - changed cable
. Faulty port on the router (they can die on you) - changed port too
. Firewall blocking DHCP traffic - disabled/removed firewall stuff
. Uninstalling Antivirus software; e.g., - uninstalled av software
. TCP/IP stack corruption from registry cleaners, spyware removal tools, etc. See: FAQ779-4625- have tried these

and it still won't connect.....

any more thoughts?

Desperate from Hebden....

. Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, Local Area Network Settings, uncheck all boxes on this page.

. Provide an ipconfig /all listing from the working notebook computer. We are going to try a static IP on the desktop, and I need to see the subnet, and gateway informatiion.

bcastner is right, this is a DHCP issue. So, first go to Administrative Tools, Services, and make sure that DHCP Client is started. If not, start it and then do an ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew and see if you're getting a configuration from the router. If it's already started then try assigning static info. I would leave DHCP as the first option and configure the Alternate Configuration info with the following:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 129.191.166.133
129.191.166.7
Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 129.191.210.14
Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 129.191.166.133
You probably know this but you change these settings in the properties for the connection. One way to get there is to right click My Network Places, click Properties, right click the Lan Connection click Poperties, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click properties. On the General tab, leave it configured for DHCP, on the Alternate Configuration tab select User Configured and then add the info above. It's set right now to Automatic Private IP Address which is why you're getting that 169.x.x.x address. DHCP is failing and the Alt Configuration is being used. There's no guarantee this will work. For whatever reason your machine is not communicating properly with the router which is most lilkely why DHCP is failing. Hope this helps.

raysjupr beat me to it, but I would just add:

In your working configuration you have an assigned Host name, and a default primary DNS suffix.

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : GBR-W2-MAN11357
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : europe.stortek.com

You might check with your ISP to see if the WINS servers are expecting a unique Host name for the Desktop computer. At a minimum, right-click My Computer, Properties, Computer Name, Change, More, and enter the default DNS suffix search order string of: europe.storetek.com

I have a possible explaination since the same thing happened to me with my ISP. Shut down the laptop or remove it from the network. Then open a 'cmd' window from the desktop and type 'ipconfig /renew' or reboot it. Does it work? If you then bring the laptop back on line, does it fail?

You also could uninstall the network card and reinstall that sometime fixes there type of problems
