I have a laptop running windows 2000. I can ping a different number of sites and some lose 1 or 2 of tha packets. Also, everytime i try to go to a site on IE, the site never loads up. I can ping from another PC to this laptop, but not vice versa. I can't even update Ad-aware or spy bot because it seems to just hang. TCP/IP settings seem to be ok. The broadband utilty states that I am connected to the internet, yet I don't see why it won't connect to the internet. Even in safe mode the laptop won't connect to the internet. It seems aas if there is something stopping it from connecting before reaching its destination. Does anyone out there know what may cause this or some trouble shooting steps to diagnose this?

Thanks

Begin by repairing the Winsock service stack:

Tried to repair the winsock. Ran the application, cleaned out any adware or spyware and still no dice. The laptop does the same thing. Attempted to repair the network connection and nothing. It gets an ip address, gateway and DNS correctly. For some reason, it just won't show any websites. From time to time I can get pieces of Yahoo, but no other site. anyone have more suggestions.

This sounds like an MTU issue. You did not describe your broadband connection, but for ADSL the connection is typically an MTU of 1492 and for cable 1500. But certain ISPs use much lower values.

. Test the connection using a Tweak Test:
. Set the appropriate MTU value. It might be as low as 1400 for some ISPs. The site linked just above has a free utility DrTCP that will allow you to adjust the Tweak Test determined MTU value. Remember to reboot and then try again.

I have cable connection. Unfortunately i can't go to that site from the laptop since it doesn't seem to download anything from any website.

Thank you

I've had a similar problem with IE 6.0 and I downloaded the Firefox browser and I can now surf without problems. I could never figure out why IE wouldn't work. I hope it helps!

what happened is that the built in nic wasn't working. I plugged in an PMCIA NIC and was able to rowse no problem thankx for all your help guys.
