Does Windows XP Home version have internet connection sharing? I know Pro does, but if home does as well, I will recommend it to a client.

Howdy:

The following is straight from Microsoft concerning XP Home..

Windows XP makes it easy for every computer on a home network to share a single connection to the Internet, to access peripheral devices including printers and CD–ROM drives, and to make files such as digital music or photos accessible to everyone.

I assume that to mean it has ICS.

One note:

It will allow remote desktop assistance, but it cannot act as the client for remote desktop support.

Only Pro allows this sort of terminal service.

One further note:

ICS can be added to any Windows client from Win98SE on, although sometimes you need to download the appropriate file from Windows Update.

Win98SE makes a perfectly good ICS client, if have an old box around, this is a good use.

To be thorough, there are some Linux dedicated solutions (in the sense that they run this application only) as router and firewall. They often can use a spare 486 or better box lying around, and the memory and hard disk drive requirements are minimal. You will need two NICs in the box.

I have set-up two sites with SmoothWall, a GNU freeware project, and they work as well or better than most SOHO routers, and offer a lot of flexibility. You can set a spare box up with a minimal hard disk and RAM requirements, and when it is running no keyboard or monitor is required:
I have a box I bought at a yard sale last weekend for $10, an HP Pentium II at 266 Mhz, 64k RAM, 1.2 Gig. hard disk, that I intend this weekend to add a NIC and setup for my own use.
