I have 2 PCs, a WinXp box and Win 98 box. I have been unsuccessful at connecting them to a router for cable internet sharing. I decided to try the Win98 box directly since it wouldn't connect. After hooking up the cable modem directly, it won't connect to the internet. I've released /renewed Ips many times, and even dropped in a new NIC. Nothing works. Still not connecting to the net.

Any ideas as to a cause???

smah - yes, only the win98 box is unable to connect. XP works fine.

snakeyes - I will try you suggestion tonight and post responses.

Any chance you 'canceled' the login that came up on the 98 box when you installed your network card? Try Start, Logoff. When the logon dialog comes up - don't cancel enter a username (password optional).

Ok, I pinged the NIC:

"Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=128"

IPCONFIG /RENEW just gets me the list of command options

IPCONFIG /ALL shows 3 Ethernet adapters:
0 is the installed NIC, lists IP, gateway, etc
1&2 are listed, but have no IP or gateway

BTW, I pinged the 98 box from the XP box and got:

"Pinging <<IP>> with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from <<IP>>: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128"

smah - Usually I do bypass the logon screen, but even if I don't no change in status.

Go to Internet Options,Connections and run Setup.
You can skip setting up e-mail until you get connection
working.

Also, you can configure your router with your user name and password. That way any pc with a working NIC connected to your router will have internet access.

Mikeyis4dcats (love the handle) Try this.
In device manager find your NIC card and delete it.
Restart your PC.
Go to the WinXP pc and use the wizard to set up a network 'work group' and remember the name you give it.
On each PC create a folder on the desktop say 'ww98' and 'wwxp'.Right click on the folders and set file sharing for both.

Now go back to your W98 PC and use the networking wizard and use the same name for the 'work group'.
restart the WinXP Pc and then the Win98 PC.

Click on My network and see if the PC's see each other.

If the Nic card is working then setting up the network is simpler and easier to debug than linking to a cable modem via a router. Once the network is established the online access is a simple matter.

I am presuming you dont have a firewall on either system.
With a cable modem this is a must for later.

snakeeyes - We're getting there. I finally got them networked....sort of. The win98 box can see and access the WinXP box, but the WinXP box tells me it can't access the workgroup. Says network path not found. Ideas?

Great start. If your win98 can see your winXP then your NIC card is now functioning fine and should be able to access the cable modem and clearly since your winXP box can access the modem it is also working. All we need is a few tweaks to get it all going.
In both computers open network properties in the control panel. Right click the 'Local area connection' in both boxes and select properties.
Make sure 'Client for Microsoft Networks'
'File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks' and 'Internet protocal(TCP/IP)' are installed in both boxes.
Doubleclick on TCP/IP on both boxes and make sure all items are set to automatic where the option exists.

Restart both computers and check the network Zero Mistakes = Zero Experience

You may want to create an lmhosts file on each machine that contains the IP and name of the other machine; Looks like a name resolution issue.

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk

Well huys, unbelievable as it is, I got my girlfriend a heck of a deal on a laptop today...so we're ditvhing the win98 box.
