Internet Connection Problem

I have 2 PCs, a WinXp box and Win 98 box. I have been unsuccessful at connecting them to a router for cable internet sharing. I decided to try the Win98 box directly since it wouldn't connect. After hooking up the cable modem directly, it won't connect to the internet. I've released /renewed Ips many times, and even dropped in a new NIC. Nothing works. Still not connecting to the net.

Any ideas as to a cause???

Nope, cable is good...same one that I'm using as I type this...

Well, when you first got the cable connection what machine did you first use it on? The reason I'm asking is that some cable company's register the mac address of the network card for your connection. Many routers have a setting to spoof or broadcast this mac address. Does this sound like it could be the case?

I first connected to the XP box, then tried to use the router.

Wouldn't my inability to get the win98 box to access the net directly through the cable modem lead me away from a router problem?

If my theory is right... it's because the 98 box is using a different network card - aka a different mac address.

In xp, open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all. Physical address is the mac address. In 98, run winipcfg, the mac address is in there also. If it's convieneint, you could try switching network cards to prove or disprove the theory.

I have already connected the modem to the 98 box and then renewed IPs. Wouldn't that have fixed the problem per you theory smah?

I'll try it again though...

Well, I reconnected the modem to the 98 box, and renewed IPs. No dice.

I also put the NIC card into my XP box and verified it works.

What on the 98 box could be blocking me???

you put the 98 NIC into the xp box and got to the internet through the NIC that was originally in the 98 box? If that's true, that blows my theory. Or did you just put it into the xp box but didn't connect through it?

smah - yes, I was able to use the NIC on the XP box to access the net

Crookedhouse - The 98 box has Netbui, IPX, and TCP/Ip all installed.

When connected via router, all lights are good, everything SHOULD work, but I get DNS error.

I'd suggest you get rid of the Netbui also check the properties of the network card to make sure the Bindings are ok.

go to your network settings;
highlight the TCP/IP protocol for your network card;
click properties;
On the IP address tab the "obtain an IP address automatically" should be selected;
WINS configuration tab, select "use DHCP for WINS resolutions";
DNS configuration, disable DNS

When connected to the router are the two computers networking successfully ?

Crooked - Those are the current settings.

Snakeeyes- I cannot see either computer on the other as far as I can tell, although I'm not as up to date on browsing the network on an XP machine

If your W98 is not networking via the router then you should focus on getting it to network first. Once that is successfully done getting the cable connection to work on both will be a snap.

In you Win98 try ping 127.0.0.1 (This is the internal )NIC loopback address.
Please post the responses.

Also try ipconfig /renew at the command prompt and list responses.
The results will help in diagnosing your NIC.

When both computers are attached to the router, only the 98 gets the DNS error?
