Hi all!

I've got Server 2003 and two ethernet switches (the ethernet switches connect 8 client computers) sitting behind a router.

Users have been complaining that the internet connection drops i.e. internet radio stops working, can't access the web etc. this stops for about 1 minute then all works again.

The users still have access to the network drives but not the internet. SBS 2003 is configured as DHCP and DNS. I spoke to the ISP and they say all is working on their side, any ideas??

Many many thanks for any help!!

Phil

Hi there!

Both yahoo.com and 4.2.2.1 can be pinged successfuly.

All users can ping and access internet then, with no pattern, it drops for as long as 180 seconds or as short as 42 seconds and then they have access again. It's dropped 12 times today, in the past 9 hours.

Also, it appears that some users have internet access whilst others don't. All users are on the same domain, this is very bizarre - any ideas would be very welcome!!!

Maybe someone is pulling all the bandwidth by using file sharing programs !

Is the server dropping internet connections as well or is this limited to the individual workstations?

Check the power management settings on the workstation NIC's, if it is on turn it off. Also check the speed settings. Auto Negotiate works best with unmanaged Switches and Routers.

Also check your external PING return rates. Above 100 m is pretty slow or you may find intermittant packets being dropped or having long return times. This would indicate a dirty line - contact your ISP (DSL - contact the phone line provider to check the line as well.)
