Using XP pro Service pack 1

I have a laptop running XP Pro with a built in NIC. I also have a wireless PMIC card that I use when I am moving around my house.

The problem I have is that whenever I use the wireless card, my system recognizes the NIC and logs me into the network. Everything works fine with the exception of the Internet connection. It comes up disabled and trying to enable the device does not seem to have any positive impact. If I disable the Wireless NIC and then re-enable it, sometimes this get the internet connection working sometimes not.

I have tried removing the NIC and reinserting it, and device manager indicates the device is working properly. The frustrating part is that the internal network connection works fine. I have access to my server and all my network resources except for the internet connection.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can resolve this problem?

Thank you for responding.

Yes it's similar but not quite. I have no problems with the network connection per se, rather only with the internet connection.

faq779-4625 is worth a try.
But my guess is that the starting desposition of the Wireless Zero Configuration service is set to manual. Start, Administrative Tools, Services, check the Wireless Zero Configuration Service status.

In addition, your power options can effect this setting. On my wife's notebook, for example, the Intel combined ethernet and wireless B adapter is by default set to have the radio disabled to save power. This is when it is running on batteries; when connected to AC power it is a different setting.

Control Panel, Power Options, and see if there is a way to change the adapter status when on batteries. As well, Control Panel, Device Manager, look directly at any power options through the adapter property sheet.

Thanks for responding. I check the zero config and it is set to auto and is running. With regards to the power option, since my wireless is not imbedded, I don't think this option applies.

Either way, I believe that if either of these settings were incorrect, I would not have any connectivity at all even to my internal network which is not the case. The only issue I have is the internet connection is disabled.

Thanks for trying.

I may have misunderstood your isssue. Is the problem that under Network Connections the entry for "Internet Gateway" appears disabled?

This particular entry is fussy, and not horribly consistent in behavior.

. You need both uPnP Service, and SSDP Client Discovery Service installed and enabled from Windows Components, Network Services;

. uPnP needs to be enabled on your Access Point/ Wireless router;

. Your firewall needs to permit port 1900 UDP and 5120 TCP to flow beween your clients and the router;

. Check Administrative Tools, Services, that the uPnP Service and Client Discovery Service is set to Automatic and started.

Normally, whether the Internet Gateway entry appears enabled or not, it should not effect your ability to access the internet.
