I am running Win98 on a 1Gb HDD using a P75 CPU and 52 MB of Ram. My Browser is IE6 and my Modem is 56K Flex External Modem and for some reason or other, my internet browsing has slowed right down to the point where it is not worth connecting. My ISP suggests that I buy a new internal 56K/V90 modem, which I am inclined to do. Has anyone had a similar experience, if so, how did you fix it? Thank you in anticipation.....Dave

This most likely is not a hardware issue but let us rule it out for sure:

Have you tried another ISP for comparison? (any of the free/pay-as-you-go services)

I'l enter a friend's configuratin and try his ISP. Thanks

There are many things that can cause you a slow down. Try a speed test from and see what your actual speed is.

It may be you just need to clean up your windows (Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk and Disk Defrag) Remove some programs from the Startup list. Remember those programs run continiously in the background using the comptr resources.

What speed do you connect at? Maybe your telephone line is faulty. If you get a modem icon in your system tray, right click on it to open and check your connection speed.

I typically connect at around 36,333 to 41,333 but I have had problems with my telephone line in the past and noticed my connection speed drop to 24,000 or even 16,000.

Not wishing to put down the other suggestions, but I would check this first.

Best thing to do to test the phone line is just take the PC to another location/friends house and try the internet using their line.

If its fine there then you should get a line check from your phone provider.

Thank You all. I will try another phone line and hook up to another ISP and see what transpires and will advise you. When I look up the speed by right clicking on the screens in the task bar , I get a reading of 56,000. It ain't operating at that speed I can guarantee.

BigPom1,
You might also try downloading the most current driver for your modem.
