During a forced shutdown of my Acer Aspire 5100 laptop, both the modem and audio got totally disabled. I'm assuming the drivers are corrupt. The device manager doesn't even acknewledge the existance of either one. Is it possible they are part of the motherboard itself? I tried googling, but with no luck. So I come here. How would I find the nessesary drivers to get them back up and running? Or maybe the problem is somthing else. Either way, please help!

What caused the forced shutdown? Was it a power surge or spike?

Have you tried running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Try this program to get an inventory of what hardware is on your computer, then look for the current drivers on the manufacturer's site.

Have a look at the Winsock fix for SP2 in this thread.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Okay, I recently found & re-installed my sound drivers, so now sound is back and working. :) But I still need the drivers for my " HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartPC " modem. Does anyone know how I can find a driver for that?

I did the shutdown, by holding down the on button for a few seconds. The computer was so locked up that my cursor wouldn't even move. My only other choice was to unplug my computer and let the battery run out, but I'm sure pretty much the same thing would have happened then.

How do I identify the modem manufacturer?

"There are two sites on the web to assist you. Locate the FCC ID number on the modem and go to and click on "FCC id codes". This should provide a manufacturer name to the corresponding ID number. Additionally, you can locate and identify the registration number on the modem. Go to and click on "FCC id # search" This should provide a manufacturer name to the FCC ID number".

See if you can get any leads to a XP driver for your Modem from here.
See what is listed under Conexant.
