Internet ADSL loses conection with our network

Hi, we have recently changed our internet connection from a lease line, to and ADSL line, and now our connection keeps stopping, and the connection indicator light on the router goes off. We run a domain network with 2 NT4 Servers, going through a Netgear router and out.

Now this is the second router we have had. Is there something that I am spose to configure on our server to stop somesort of time out?

Any help would be great, as I keep having to reboot our router 10 to 20 times a day.

Extra info:

Router - Netgear DG814
Timeout on router set to 0
Internet will bomb out while connected
ISP Nildram

Do the link lights etc on the router drop when the connection drops ?

Might be worth phoning nildram and having a line check performed

Ah, ok, this starts to make sense, with our old router, the lights just stoped flickering, and was just on all the time. But since we changed it that has not happened, the light dropped off the once, so maybe the problem is actually sorted, I shall keep tabs on it.

Thanks very much, this is actually very usefull.

I'm having the same problem with my 814 since attempting to upgrade the OS. Didn't work, finally managed a roll back, but now I get around 20 mins connectivity before the thing looses it :( Timeout set to "0"

It's darned annoying isn't it!!

I have tried to use the router with just the one PC attatched and disconnected from the network, and it is still doing it, I therefore assume that this model has a bug somewhere down the line that no one wants to admit to or address.

I have solved the problem by typing in the DNS numbers for my IPS in the setup page. Don't know why this should help, but it has.

Unfortunately, i already have this configured, time to get on to netgear I think. It's an hours wait though.

Yup, you're right. It is a long wait. And then about onther hour on the phone b4 they decide to send you a replacement. What with the call cost, and the cost of sending the old one back.... I lost any savings I made buying online :(

DLink next time methinks.

Did you resolve your problem?

I installed a DG814 router last night and it won't work. The internet light did come on the first time I connected it, I followed the instructions, configured everything and then rebooted both the PC and the router. I can access the router via the browser but the Internet light never comes on. I switched back over to my USB modem and it worked straight away so the line is OK and my ISP was not having any problems. I downloaded the latest firmware but it hasn't made a difference. It is as if the router does not know it is connected to a DSL line?

Any advice please as I am most frustrated.

Cheers

When you switch the router on, does the internet light flash at all?

Presuming your username and password is correct, I'd put in the dns numbers by hand too.

Set your timeout to zero, and your mtu to 1458 vc based.

I'd check with your provider first and go over the setup with them.

No the light does not come on at all.

Username and password is correct, dns in manual too

Timeout is zero, mtu default = 1458 and is VC based.

All settings OK, been checked and double-checked. If I connect up my other ADSL 'modem' it works fine, same DNS settings etc so nothing wrong there.

Also, out of the box the Internet light came on, so this was before any of my settings had been added. The router has been reset to factory defaults, but because it cannot detect the link it cannot auto-configure itself i.e it cannot detect any WAN settings.

It just cannot detect that it is connected to a DSL line.

I'll 'play' with it again tonight when I get in, by the sounds of it it's not worth, just yet that is, sending it back as I may just get same problems with a replacement.

Damn annoying

I am not going to use netgear routers again, they seem either too unreliable, or to complex to set up correctly, this is the second one we have had, and it doesxn't seem to be able to cope with the demands made on it. It is a shame, it looked pretty nifty to me.

Yup, I thought that too. But it's been too much of a pain. It's running flawlessly now, but I don't expect to have to send things back (wiping out any savings made by purchasing on the internet), and it's been unstable with OS upgrades too.

D-Link next time methinks.

I sorted out my netgear router problem by firstly using SpyBot to get rid of all spyware etc and then updating winXP (from microsofts site) and then getting rid of the MSBLAST virus... search your hard drive for MSBLAST... once i did that no problems at all

never thought it would actually be a virus; it has proved to be a problem for so many people. I read this sollution on another forum.

Hope this helps people...

I'm not convinced it's the router from what Iv'e read. What kind of ADSL modem are you running? Or does the phone like plug right into the router? I'm willing to be that your ISP is reselling your local bell's ADSL (its not a bad thing) and that bell may have a short in your line somewhere. Next time it happens, call you ISP and ask pointed questions like who owns the dslam. If they are an infant bell (clec) then they own the dslam and you have phone service from them. I'd see if they can offer you a T1.

ADSL is great. Once it's up it hardly ever goes down. It's getting it up thats always the issue. Telco Lines have to be next to perfect and you have to be with in a certain distance from the CO.
