I'm adding two new XP boxes to an existing NW4.11 network. I was able to get them on the network but was unable to access the internet. The other PCs on the network are running 95 and have DSL internet access through a BayStack 400. Most of the other PCs are only using IPX/SPX, how are they getting internet access without TCP/IP? Are there any configuration files that would give me the gateway IP address to use TCP/IP or do I use IPX/SPX and, if so, how. Thanks for any and all help.

Are the Win95 boxes using DHCP or do they have a static IP address? If static, use the same gateway and DNS settings on the XP box as you have on the Win95 machines and then input a new IP address on the XP box. If DHCP, make sure the XP box is set to obtain IP and DNS.

Thanks SuperDave,

Unfortunately most of the 95 boxes don't have/use IP addresses (not using TCP/IP)or a gateway (at least any place a gateway would normally be specified), could there be some NetWare configuration file that would specify the gateway. I tried setting the XPs to automatically obtain IP and DNS, that didn't work. HELP!

If you are not running TCP/IP on the workstations then you must something like bordermanager running on the NW4.11 using the IP/IPX gateway service. What services are running on the 4.11 server

IPX & SPX are running on the server. It also looks like TCP/IP is running but not used, no IP addresses list. What is bordermanager and how do I utilize the IP/IPX gateway service?

Bordermanager is another Novell product used to secure your networks from the internet and give users access to the internet. If it's not running and your workstations do not have TCP/IP loaded then the only other way to access the internet is have a gateway service running.

What is the list of running NLM on your server ?

I finally figured it out, the BayStack 400 Instant Internet is a single phone line (dial-up, not DSL) sharing switch. You to have the Instant Internet client software running on each PC. The BayStack uses TCP/IP, the PC's do not. Thanks everyone for your help.

Haven't heard of these Bay things for some time. I used to look after a few of them. I'd be surprised if the XP PC's will be able to connect to the Baystack box as NT / 2000 wasn't supported last time I had looked. There's 7 files needed on a Win9X workstation for it to work and you can put these in place manually / via a batch file / login script....
