I have a client that is interested in setting up internal email for his 4 computer network. Now he obviously read somewhere that he can have internal email and now wants it. Prolly on the side of a milk carton. Pretty silly I know. But my question is this:

If he doesn't have a domain (just working with a workgroup), won't have a permanent connection to the internet, and is running win2k, can he set up a computer to be a file server and mail server all with group permissions?? This sounds crazy to me, but every time I say that it can be done. Please help :)

Thanks!

You can certainly do it using vpop ( This is a cracking programme that can be used to distribute internet email to the correct person and also do internal email. It's cheap, easy to set up and works very nicely. We use it and have not found any snags at all. Peter Meachem

Thank you very much!! We would, of course, like to see more options for this, so if anyone has anything else I could check out, that would be great!

Thanks again Peter!

I have used Pegasus Mail for Windows very successfully in small offices such as the situation you describe. One machine on the network acts as the internal server. All the machines map the same drive letter to the "PMAIL" folder on the "server" (lets say g:). Each machine can have a shortcut to the Pegasus program: G:\program files\PMAIL\winpm-32.exe. Internal mail is transferred immediately upon pressing the "send" button. You install Pegasus on the "server", define users and create shortcuts. Thats all it takes.

Pegasus is a full featured email client that not only will work as an internal mail system but will retrieve and send POP/SMTP mail through the internet if any machine is so connected.

Pegasus is available free of charge and in many different languages. You can learn more at
