I've currently got a third party 4 post rack, setup for HP Proliant servers.

Could someone please do me a favour and measure the depth between the posts on a Dell rack please?

I've just bought one Dell server with the non-Dell 4 post rack kit and I don't intend to buy another (non-Dell rack kit) because they're truly awful!

Thanks

I have both Compaq and Dell racks in my server room. The Cpq/HP rails are about 6 or 7 milimeters too long for the Dell racks without adjustment. You can adjust the depth spacing on them.

The Dell rails go into the Compaq racks just fine, they have more than 1cm of depth adjustment built into the rails. Dell assumes a little more depth in the rear of the rack for cable managment: Dell racks have an extra 10cm of depth over the 9100 Series Compaq racks.

Basically, the Dell racks are Rittal racks with a little cosmetic customization.

So if you have a rack that HP equipment will fit in, presumably with square holes, you should be fine getting the Dell Rapid Rails.

Does that help?

I have a 42U Dell rack being delivered and I have two compaq servers to fit into it a DL320 and a ML350 with rack mount conversion kit. any ideas would be great!!

craigholt1, there are two things you can do in that case, and either one is fine. I ran into that scenario *after* there were several other Dell computers in the rack. The Compaq fixed length rails are about 6 or 7 mm too long, so since I already had equipment in the rack, I went to the hardware store and found some spacers (thick washers) to put between the tab on the rail and the rack. If you were starting from scratch, the rear uprights of the rack are adjustable, and you can set them for the Cpq rail length, and the Dell rails will still work fine.

make sense?

...and I've got the Dell VersaRails mounted in everything including the kitchen sink. I did have to bend a tab out of the way to fit them into an ancient rack, but otherwise no problems.
