Hi every one. Every now and then, according to the task manager, my system starts using up to 50% cpu time. It continues until I re-start the computer. I thought that this was the norton anti virus but it still happens after ive uninstalled it!.
Does any one have any ideas?
No other processes appear to be using any cpu resource at the time.

regards

Dave

Some things to try.

See if you have any unrequired Services running that you can disable.

Check for Adware and Spyware.

Spybot

Type MSCONFIG in the Run Box to see what is loading at start up.

You might find some information here.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I also get high cpu usage some times. Task manager says it is System idle process. I can not end this task and is always present. Any ideas? I have XP Pro and I am not sure if it happened when I had win2k installed. Thank you.

Thanks "linney",I will try your suggestions.

The high system idle that you are getting "jaredresearch" is what it should be doing. It indicates that the system is idle. I get this when everything is OK.

Dave

jaredresearch,

You want to end the system idle process?

Your computer is either doing something, or it is idle. The statistics shown for the idle process is a measure of unused system resources.

One good use for these idle processes is to put them to work doing cancer research, early childhood disease research, the search for extra-terrestial intelligence, and other causes. These background crunching programs will not affect your computer use for regular activities, they just use the idle process resources to do some good.

Hundreds of thousands of computer users donate their idle computer time for research every day. Look at this link for some noteworthy Distributed Computing projects:
The largest projects are United Devices, Stanford's Folding@Home, and SETI, but there are others.
