Hi all,
I want to give a retention level of 18months to few of my backups but the only options (NB 4.5 MP6)available are 1 yr or infinite. Does this mean that i'll have to give a retention period of infinite and then manually expire all images after 18 months.

I need a suggestion too.
I want different scedules of a policy to run on different volume pools. Should i check the override policy volume pool check box for all except one or should i design new policies for them. Which is better?

Thank you all..and im sorry if the answers are pretty obvious and are already in the available guides (altho,i ve read those)

I have 4.5fp6 which should be similar. If you go into the Veritas admin gui and then Netbackup Management - Host Properties - Master Server then right click on the Master server and select properties. This will then open all of the property options for the master server. In the properties screen select Retention Periods. This will display all of the available Retention Periods. Select one of the infinite ones that you do not use!!!! When you select/highlight the one you want to change then click on the Units dropdown box and change it to year/month/day to meet your needs and click apply and you should have your new retention period. Hope this helps!

As for your other question, it's up to you but I think that the simpler the better. So keep the number of policies to the minimum and just overide the volume pool. Thats what we do and it works fine.

But some people will give the opinion that you do not need differant volume pools. NB will manage the allocation of tapes quite happily from one pool. I don't hold with that point of view as I need an easy way to monitor how many tapes are being used for daily/weekly/yearly schedules.

Just don't use the 'allow mixed retention periods'. That way just leads to madness.

Thanks a lot lenski for the suggestion!
Cheers,
Jyoti
