Can someone explain why and how we use a VLAN interface in a layer 3 switch?

thx all....

If you have any layer 2 ports on the switch and you want to route traffic to/from them.

so for example on a layer 3 switch running HSRP between two switches?
thx....

HSRP means Hot Standby Router Protocol - it is for routers, not switches, unless you are referring to Layer3 switches, which basically are enhanced routers.

got ya yes, that is what I said in my last msg layer 3.. but thx for the input..

well you have omitted layer 3 from "running HSRP between two switches", that's why I stopped and asked:)

loops... you use a vlan interface on a layer 3 switch or RSM/MSM to create an interface that will enable IP routing..without the interface you really just have seperated the broadcast domains but have not given the attached devices any wany to pass traffic.

thx... I want to run two 3550 switchs parrellel and run HSRP between them between different vlans.. so I guess I can run vlan interfaces to do this..

yes you need the vlan interfaces, you can't assign the actual ports to be a layer 3 interface and expect it to work..

for HSRP, the HSRP agents need to be a common bus, so that they can see/respond to each others HSRP annoucements, etc..
