At the moment i have 2 1700 routers at both ends of a Leased line. They have X21 connections to a media converter which converts to BNC.
We are moving to a new 10Mb LAN extension and i am therefore thinking of change the X21 Interface Cards to RJ45. Would i need to do any configuration changes to the CISCO routers or will they boot OK with the new RJ45 interface cards picking up all the IP settings etc.
My knowledge is limited as these were initially installed by a previous employee.

No you will have to manually configure the routers for the new interfaces (I assume WIC-1ENET modules?). When you remove the old WIC-1T modules and insert the new WIC-1ENET modules the router will complain on bootup (THE MODULES ARE NOT HOT SWAPABLE, you need to switch it off first). It will complain about interface serialx not being available. However the changes are going to be very simple. Copy the current configs to a PC and make a note of the IP addresses on each of the Serial interfaces, then when you add the Ethernet modules simply apply the IP addressing the same as it was on the Serial module:

!OLD
interface Serail1
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
!

!NWQ
interface Ethernet1
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.252

Thanks for getting back.
What do i need to do to tell it that the Serial interface is no longer in the Router. I have already got the IP details for it.

Nothing. Once you have reconfigured the router the startup configuration file will be overwritten and it will remove the unused lines.
