I've fixed countless machines, yet for the moment, I'm a bit stumped. The computer had tons of spyware and tons of virii installed. I've used ms defender, x-cleaner, spybot, hijackthis, etc to remove the spyware. I've used avg to remove the virii. It is now completely clean of both, however the internet is not functioning. I've tried rebuilding the winsock, etc using netsh. The nic card communicates with the router, and gets an ip address through dhcp no problem. I can load up the page for the router(by accessing and that works fine. However as soon as I try to go to a website, it gives an error and no packets are transferred. I'm assuming that internet explorer seems to be messed up, as packets should be transferring as soon as I type in that address. Also, no programs can access the web(specifically looking for updates on the anti-spyware programs, as well as avg antivirus), so its not just internet explorer. It just seems that windows refuses to communicate with the nic card. There are also two nic cards installed, and the other one is disabled. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Marc

Yeah, same issue on the other one. It will grab an ip address from dhcp, and it will transfer say 20-100 packets each way, but no internet. Although both can access the routers website(

Have you let IE search the connections out again?

You mean tools->internet options->connections->setup and do the broadband? Yeah I tried that, and still nothing.

What version of OS and IE are we dealing with?

How about a tracert to one of the sites you can't connect to via IE?

xp, sp2(problem was happening before sp2 install, and continues after i installed it), and should be version of ie that comes with sp2. Ie version shouldnt matter too much, as no other program can access the internet(like ms defender updates, etc).

What error message are you getting when you try to go to a website? I'm assuming the browser times out and then says something.

If you can use the router's web page, then your network stack is probably ok. It could just be a configuration problem.

Do you know if you can resolve anything in DNS? Open up a command window and type "[tt]nslookup [ignore]www.ebay.com[/ignore][/tt]" (or any other website). Does it give you an IP address or some error message?

Do you know if your default gateway is set correctly? This would probably be your router's address.

Can you open a command window, type the command "[tt]ipconfig /all[/tt]", and then post the results? It could be just a configuration problem.

It does the standard thing, however it gives a message saying it cant open it within say 3 seconds. I can't open a command prompt, as it gives some error saying 16 bit application yadda. A virus probably knocked that out. I can however do the netsh command and itll work from windows->run. I'll try the nslookup and paste the results in a bit. Default gateway is set from dhcp, and it works fine on any other computer on the network. I'll do the ipconfig /all command as well and paste it.

Breakthrough: If I type in the ip address, it will access the website. Soooo the DNS is the problem

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /release

" " /renew

" " /registerdns

that should do it for you!
