We are looking at a BCM 400 and have one feature on our current (Avaya) system that we cannot live without: if a user is on the phone talking on the handset, his/her assistant can talk to them through the phone speaker to announce waiting calls etc.

I cannot seem to get a straight answer on whether the Nortel BCM 400 supports this feature (I am sure there is a more elegant name for it than the description I supplied above)

THanks in advance for any help !!!

Voice Call, but I don't know if this will work when your on the phone talking to someone else.

I think voice call just says 'on another call' or 'no voice call' if the person is busy and then it just rings as a normal call would. I believe there is an auto hold on page option in the BCM but that would interrupt the current call in progress of course. Plus you'd have to have every assistant and manager in their own page group. There is also a feature called priority call (F69) that can be used to interrupt a person on a call but I don't think there are any options to use the phone and the speaker at the same time as you are describing. Perhaps someone else has a better suggestion or knows more about this.

If you're on a call, and someone tries to voice call, they'll get the message "on another call" on their display. If you try a priority call, it will ring over the second intercom key.

No way to barge over someones speaker when they are on a call, short of the "autohold for incoming page" that was mentioned. I'd probably chase someone down and hit them with my handset if someone started talking over my speaker when I'm on another call, but that's just me.... :)

That is quite a strange feature to hinge your decision upon...

Autohold during page is a setting that can help accomplish this.
