May I ask: Is it really necessary to have water-cooled motherboard when using the new Quad-4 processor?

There are some fairly good horror stories by peoplewhose water-cooled systems have sprung a leak?

Here is a question to ask you...Do you plan on over clocking them? If not Intel creates their processors to withstand the heat in generates as long as you are using an approved heat sink and fan. I know having a system cooler is better, but if you are not going to over clock the processor than you would be wasting money. As for your concern fro the leaking issue, anything can break, however, the stories you may have heard, the people probably did not install them properly. I had a water cooling kit and the hoses are very strong and the attachments are very secure, but don't buy a cheap kit, the saying "you get what you pay for" is true to water cooling kits.

No, I do not intend to overclock. The new gear that I am about to purchase should run my computer and my game Flt.Sim X with everything set to maximum............I Hope?

It's hard to say, since you didn't provide your specs. Most likely though, the video card will be a bigger bottleneck than your CPU when playing games.

I think I am going to wait for the new AMD quad core....I went to an AMD seminar and the heat generated from the AMD chip is way less than anything on the market.... Talking to the techs and seeing it in action has me sold.

That's probably because on the AMD quad cores each core can be clocked and volted independently of the other cores. So if you only need a single core, the extra three can be downclocked and volted to save power.

Looks like some pretty sweet stuff.

The bottom line will always be: If you are using your components as they are, without fiddling, then the cooling devices they came with will be fine.

That stands for more than just CPUs.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Sorry about not including my specs. I hope they will be on this post.

My new specs when I build my next computer should be the same but with a AW9D MAX Intel 975X, Skt 775 Dual PCI-E, a Quad core intel processor and a Gainward 8279-BLISS GeForce 8800 GTS Video Card. I hope that I will be able to run Flt.Sim X with everything set to max?

I've got to believe that the 8800 GTS is more than enough to run Flight Simulator X at the highest levels (assuming that you're not running 3 monitors or an insanely high resolution). Is there a problem doing that with the 7800GTX?

kmcferrin, yes I do have two monitors running. By switching to one, would that increase the ability to drive Flt.Sim. X with a bit more humph please?

I run the sim at 1024x768, instead of my normal res of 1280x1024. I would really like to run everything at 1280x1024 which is the maximum my monitors can hack!

Sounds like you've probably got enough power there. The only way that you'll get more is to go with SLI, and I don't know if FSX actually supports SLI.

As to whether switching to one would make a difference, that depends. Does your game screen span both monitors, or is one of them used for your desktop while the other runs the game? If it is the former, then you're running at an effective resolution of 2048x768, which obviously requires twice as much work from the graphics card.

Flight Simulator has a pretty strong fan base. I suspect that you could find a web forum somewhere on the Internet that is dedicated to Flight Simulator, and some people there would be able to give you much better specific information.

Thank you kmcferrin. I only have one graphics slot so SLI is out. However, if I get around to putting my proposed computer together, I should not have any problems, that is unless Micrsoft bring out Flt.Sim. FX-10 in the near future?

I do belong to a Flt.Sim forum but if you read some of the replies there you may well be astounded. For example one expert reckons that he can run FS-X at 90fps, but it goes down to 40fps with everything turned up to max. AND all that with a celron ( think it is called?) processor!! Geez!
