Insufficient system resources problem

Trying to use Iomega software and external usb hard drive to do complete system backup.Tried selective startup in msconfig.still get same error message "Insufficient system resources". can use software in safe mode > not sure if that is the mode to do a back up in?

There are several causes for errors such as yours:

. Your paging file is too small. Increase the size of virtual memory.

. IRQStackSize issues

Adding more RAM could well help.

There is nothing wrong with using Safe Mode to do the backup.

Thanks for the suggestions you provided to correct my problem with my Iomega external hard drive for a complete system backup! Have been unable to use the software provided, keep getting the same message insufficient memory. I was able to do a complete system backup with the provided software, but only in the "safe mode" without any problems. And do a backup of data without any problem in the normal mode.
Was wondering if this is an acceptable way to recover completely from a complete system failure? Will this recover everything?
Also how much should I increase the size of virtual memory?

For RAM less than 1gb, use the simple rule of 1.5 times installed RAM. The minimum should be 12MB + installed RAM.

The fact that you have to use Safe Mode as part of your Backup procedure is certainly not normal. Are you using Iomega supplied software for backing up or some other program?

The test of any backup is whether it can actually be restored and there is only one way to confirm that with all the inherent risks involved. Still, it is an important piece of information to know.

By far the critical backup is that of your private data, having that safe and secure is half the battle, after all you can always install XP from the CD. If you want a mini backup of your XP settings you could look at using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

As far as your data is concerned don't rely on just one backup copy of it.
